Where can I trade in a gold wedding band with diamonds set in and a gold solitaire engagement ring?

I have a gold wedding band with diamonds set in and a gold solitaire engagement ring, but I really hate gold.. Is there a place I can go to trade them in for silver ones of equal quality? I know gold is worth more these days anyway..

  1. I don't know of any place that would do a direct trade. You will probably have to sell your jewelry and buy something new or find a jeweler who will use your stones, set them in silver or white gold and use the value of the scrap gold to pay for his/her services. You could also get your rings rhodium plated. They will look exactly like white gold (a lot of the white gold and silver is rhodium plated these days). You might have to re-new the plating every few years depending on the wear.
  2. There are not many places left that will rhodium plate yellow gold. It's not a good choice in the long run for you, however, because it will fade way too quickly and you will have to keep getting it done. I wouldn't suggest doing an even trade on a ring in silver anyhow. You would be cheating yourself out of money and silver is a less durable metal so your diamonds won't be as protected. It also tarnishes too quickly. I would suggest completely remounting the diamonds in WHITE GOLD or just trading them in on a white gold set. I know you can do trade-ins at Kay Jewelers (or any of the stores in their company: JB Robinson, Leroys, Jareds, Marks n Morgan, etc). Their policy is that you have to double the value of your trade-in and pay out the difference. So for example, if your set is worth $500, you pick a set for $1000 and pay $500. Good luck with whatever you decide =]
