What good and delicious plants can I grow without way to much maintance in Iowa?

I want to grow a garden in central Iowa. I am going to grow strawberries, blueberries and I already have a asparagus patch going now. What else could I grow?

1. The problem with berries is that the birds also think they're delicious! Some other easy & tasty stuff to grow includes lettuce, radishes, carrots, spinach. Tomatoes are good also but, come August, everyone has too many tomatoes! You might try growing peppers.
2. You will need to protect them in winter.You also might consider,Squash,Cucumbers,Peppers,Tomatoes or some herbs or corn if you have the space.
3. Corn, soybeans and pigs. What else?
