How far away is Iowa from legalizing same sex marriage?

I read an article that says there's a high court in Iowa hearing out this case that may legalize same sex marriage in their state. This was reportedly going on for 3 years and will take another year longer. That sounds odd: a 4-year court case? What kind of court case lasts that long?

Public Comments

  1. Standard for any case challenging the federal DOMA. Not happening.
  2. That will happen when John Deere changes his name to Jane.
  3. Actually, most important court cases these days last that long. They start in a lower court, they get appealed to an appellate court, and then finally to the supreme court. Pre-trial negotiating, discovery, trial, yada yada yada. Four years is not at all unusual.
  4. So far, the only courts that have struck down laws against same-sex marriage have been in solidly "blue" states, which Iowa is not. So my answer to your question is, probably a long way indeed.
